sinus bath soak with epsom salts for congestion

A face full of sinus congestion is the WORST. There are lots of natural remedies to relieve sinus congestion, but one of my favorites is a DIY sinus bath soak.

This DIY bath soak with essential oils is super easy to pull together and will provide almost instant relief for congestion.

VAPORIZING BATH SALTS

Lots of people use a certain blue colored vaporizing product to make their own vapor bath soak. But this homemade version gets its vaporizing action from eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils so it’s completely natural and non-toxic.

Eucalyptus and peppermint essential oils both contain natural menthol, a potent decongestant that can provide fast relief for colds, flus and allergies. When you combine them with the hot, steamy bath water they work quickly to relieve congestion.

EPSOM SALT BATH SOAK

My sinus bath soak uses Epsom salts to help detoxify and relax the body. If you’re not familiar with epsom salts, they are amazing and have lots of uses!

Epsom salts are high in magnesium, act as a wonderful pain reliever, help relieve achy muscles and work to detox the body. They can be used in a relaxing detox bath at any time, but are especially useful during cold and flu season.

WHERE TO BUY EPSOM SALTS

Epsom salts are widely available. They can of course be purchased online, at your local grocery store or even Wal-Mart keeps them in stock.

SINUS BATH SOAK FOR KIDS

A sinus bath soak is great for sick kids as well as adults. However if you have young kids (younger than 6), avoid using eucalyptus and peppermint for their bath. These oils can actually have the opposite effect and make them MORE congested.

Instead, opt for kid-safe decongestant oils, like Pine, Fragonia or Rosalina. I always keep these 3 essential oils on hand during cold and flu season for sinus baths and diffusing in our favorite diffuser.

I also love this Kid-Safe blend called Sniffle Stopper, which contains Rosalina, fir needle and several other kid-friendly oils that are great for congestion in kids.

This recipe makes 2 cups of sinus bath salts, enough for 2 baths for adults or 4 kids baths. They store wonderfully in a glass jar of any type. I like to use the wide mouth mason jars for storing bath salts.

HOW TO DO YOUR DIY BATH SOAK

Measure 1 cup for adults and ½ cup for kids of the finished bath salts and pour into a hot bath. Soak for at least 20 minutes.

This is great to do before bed since the magnesium in the Epsom salts promotes relaxation and can help you (or your kids!) get a good night’s sleep.

OTHER WAYS TO BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM

I do a detox bath with epsom salts for my kids on the regular and it is especially helpful to remove toxins when they have been exposed to germs.

If you’re not already taking elderberry syrup, now is the perfect time to start! Elderberry syrup boosts your immune system and can shorten the length of your cold or flu. I have an easy elderberry syrup recipe here and a frozen elderberry drops version my kids love here.
